Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, and Our Greatest Fan, Miss Kaminsky,
It was a pleasure to perform for you at Wakeland High School on May 3rd!
We opened with the clarinet choir. If Henry Mancini only knew, then he would have written his "Pink Panther" (Music by Henry Mancini; arranged by Calvin Custer) and "Moon River" (Music by Henry Mancini; arranged by James Christensen) for the Frisco Community Band clarinet choir. Swinging, dark, rich clarinet tones filled the hall.
The Frisco Community Band also played a segment of "Sleep" by Eric Whitacre. Several of us were inspired by the virtual choir created by Maestro Whitacre. We joined our wind instruments in the tradition of their voices. If you haven't heard it with the virtual choir click here.
The Brass Ensemble played a couple of All-American pieces (look for the update to titles, arrangers, and interesting tidbits soon)
We also played "Spoon River" written by Percy Aldridge Grainger and arranged by Robert Sheldon (not to be confused with Moon River by Mancini. You can hear Dr. Trent sing Moon River if you come to rehearsal. It's quite stirring.), "West Highlands Sojourn" by Robert Sheldon (yep, we think it's the same fellow as the arranger of "Spoon River", feel free to quiz Dr. Trent) "Variations on a Shaker Melody" by Aaron Copeland.
The Saxophone Ensemble provided a nifty piece written just for saxophone (look for the update to titles, arrangers, and interesting tidbits soon)
One of our oboe players, a high school senior, joined two of her beautiful peers for a vibraphone performance that would have taken the breath of the Blue Man Group away. Musically challenging, amusing, entertaining, and exact percussion precision brought the Frisco Community Band and the audience to their feet! Did I mention that they successfully percussed a chair?
We are particularly pleased to play a segment of a brand spankin' new arrangement of John Williams "Adventures on Earth". Paul Lavender, the arranger for this piece, worked with John Williams so that the orchestral qualities are accurately preserved in the band environment. John Williams has gifted the music world with many silver screen, musical offerings. We are also now aware of the demand Mr. Williams places on the musicians who face his scribing. Our french horn players were pushed to their very maximum of the range of their instruments. (We are proud of 'em. There are only two right now. Feel free to jump in to support 'em.... )
Our next rehearsal is the Tuesday before Memorial Day. We play again the Tuesday after Memorial Day. If there's something you want to hear; let us know!
In 2004, the Frisco Community Band was formed as a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization benefiting the City of Frisco and its neighboring communities.
The Band provides Frisco area musicians with the opportunity to expand or continue their experience in the performing arts with the ultimate purpose of making live, symphonic and ensemble music accessible to all segments of the community.
The FCB exists with the support of the Frisco Association of the Arts and is funded through grants, donations and member dues. All area musicians with at least a High School music background are welcome.
There are no auditions for the concert band.
Performances are free to the public.
FCB concert band rehearses Tuesday nights at 7:30 in the Frisco High School band hall unless otherwise noted.
Join us by 7:20 PM (we like to toot individually before we seriously play), ready for a 90 minutes of music. All rehearsals are open to prospective members.
Frisco High School is located near the Tollway and Stonebrook. Please find us at 6401 Parkwood Drive, Frisco, Texas 75034. You'll find the band hall entrance located on the west side of the main building to the right of the auditorium and cafeteria. Look for the recessed glass doors and come on in!
